GrandSpeed - Internet speed test for video, audio, gaming

Download speed shows how much data can move to your device, but real-time apps also depend on latency, jitter, loaded latency, packet loss, and bufferbloat. An internet speed test can report strong megabits per second and your connection can still feel slow when it gets busy, especially if large downloads or uploads make latency spike. That is why a thorough test looks beyond raw Mbps.

Idle latency is measured when your connection is not busy. Loaded latency is measured during active downloads or uploads. Loaded latency is often more useful for real-world use because it shows how responsive your connection stays when other traffic is using bandwidth. A good internet speed test measures both so you can spot bufferbloat.

Most internet plans are asymmetric because most users download more data than they upload. ISPs often give more capacity to download traffic. But people who livestream, upload large files, use cloud storage, or work from home may need to pay close attention to upload speed or choose a symmetric connection.

Network congestion happens when many users or devices share the same network resources at the same time. In busy periods, especially in the evening, congestion can reduce download and upload speeds, raise latency and jitter, and sometimes cause packet loss. That is why a wireless internet speed check may perform better at one time of day than another.

Internet speeds are usually measured in bits per second, while file sizes and storage are usually measured in bytes. Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, a file size in gigabytes is not the same as a speed in gigabits. Knowing the difference helps you estimate download times and read speed test results correctly.

Yes. GrandSpeed is an internet speed test that works in any modern browser, so you can check internet speed on Wi-Fi using a phone, tablet, or laptop without installing an app. For the most accurate wireless internet speed check, stand near the router, close background apps, and run the test twice — once on Wi-Fi and once on cellular — to compare.

GrandSpeed is an independent internet speed test, not tied to any search engine. You can find many testers online, but GrandSpeed measures download, upload, latency, jitter, packet loss, loaded latency, and DNS performance in one place, giving you a fuller picture than a simple internet speed test.

Download speed is how fast data moves from the internet to your device. It affects streaming, browsing, downloads, and software updates. Higher download speed can improve video quality and help downloads finish sooner. When you run an internet speed test, download is usually the first and largest number you see.

Your top download speed depends on your internet type. For example, ADSL, 4G, 5G, Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) all have different limits. Fibre usually gives the best performance. Even on the same network type, ISPs offer different speed tiers, so your plan still matters.

Distance also matters. With ADSL, speed falls as you move farther from the service exchange. With 4G/5G, speed drops as you move farther from the nearest mobile base station. Network congestion can also cut speed. When many users share the same network resources, especially in the evening, your available speed may fall. This is called contention and is covered later under network congestion.

Upload speed is how fast data moves from your device to the internet. It affects online forms, cloud uploads, server transfers, and livestreaming to sites like YouTube or Facebook. An internet speed test that only reports download misses this vital metric.

Most users download more than they upload, so ISPs often give download traffic more capacity than upload traffic. These are called asymmetric connections. For example, 4G LTE Advanced can reach peak download speeds of about 1000 Mbit/s and peak upload speeds of about 500 Mbit/s. Some providers offer symmetric connections, where upload and download speeds are the same. These are useful for livestreaming and remote work.

If your work depends on sending data, make sure your upload speed is high enough before you choose a plan. Tools like our Internet/ISP Speed Recommender can help you find the minimum speed you need.

Latency, often measured with the ping command, is the time it takes a small packet of data to travel to another device and back. It is measured in milliseconds (ms). Low latency matters for real-time apps like online games, video calls, and voice calls. High latency can cause delays, interruptions, or lag. You can read more in Cloudflare's guide to latency.

In real use, latency is not steady. It changes from moment to moment. Jitter is the gap between the highest and lowest latency values you measure. High jitter can hurt real-time apps even when average latency looks fine.

Idle latency is the latency you measure when the connection is not busy. Loaded latency is the latency you measure when the connection is busy, such as during downloads or uploads. Loaded latency often rises at these times.

Even if your idle latency is low, high loaded latency can still hurt gaming, video calls, and other real-time apps. GrandSpeed measures both idle and loaded latency so you can see how responsive your connection is. You can run a speed test to check both values.

Network congestion happens when too many users or devices try to use the same part of a network at the same time. The available bandwidth must be shared more thinly, so everyone's connection slows down. It is a lot like rush hour traffic: even if the road can handle high speeds, too many cars force everyone to move more slowly.

On the internet, congestion often shows up in busy periods, usually in the evening, when many homes are streaming video, gaming, browsing, or downloading at once. It can happen in many places, including your local Wi-Fi, your ISP's neighbourhood network, mobile base stations, or the servers that host the content you want.

When congestion is present, you may see slower download and upload speeds, higher latency, more jitter, and sometimes packet loss. These effects can make real-time apps like video calls and online games feel unstable or laggy, even if your connection usually works well. Congestion is also linked to contention ratios — the number of users sharing the same network resources. The more users that contend for the same bandwidth, the more likely performance is to drop during peak hours. Modern networks and ISPs use many methods to manage congestion, but it is still a normal part of shared networks.

Computers use numerical addresses called IP addresses. Because these numbers are hard for people to remember, the Domain Name System (DNS) acts like the internet's directory service. DNS turns human-friendly names, such as CNN.com, into IP addresses, such as 8.16.8.2, so your browser can reach the right server. DNS also supports reverse lookups, which turn IP addresses back into domain names.

Your device uses a DNS server to make these changes. DNS resolution speed is how fast that server can turn a domain name into its matching IP address. Faster DNS resolution can help websites start loading sooner. GrandSpeed probes several public DNS resolvers and ranks the three fastest DNS servers for your location, so you can switch if your default is slow.

Packet loss happens when data sent from one device does not reach its destination. It is shown as a percentage of lost packets out of the total sent. In an ideal connection, packet loss is 0%. But network congestion, weak signal quality, or short outages can all cause packet loss.

For example, Starlink's satellite-based system may sometimes have short outages during satellite handover. That can cause a temporary rise in packet loss. GrandSpeed measures packet loss so you can spot these issues.

Bits and bytes are both units used to measure data. A byte contains 8 bits. Storage is usually shown in bytes, such as a DVD that holds 4.7 gigabytes. Network speeds are usually shown in bits per second, such as megabits per second. This means 4.7 gigabytes equals 37.6 gigabits. Knowing the difference helps you read speed test results and file sizes the right way.

Bufferbloat happens when network devices, like your home router, modem, or internet provider's gear, keep too much temporary storage memory, or buffers, and do not manage it well. Buffers are meant to hold short bursts of data so packets do not get dropped. But as memory became cheaper, manufacturers started adding huge buffers to routers. When your connection gets busy, such as during a large upload or download, these oversized buffers fill up.

Internet protocols usually rely on small packet drops as a signal to slow down. Big buffers hide that signal, so network congestion stays hidden. Your computer keeps sending data at full speed, while interactive traffic gets stuck behind a long queue of waiting packets.

In everyday use, bufferbloat makes the internet feel slow even when you pay for a fast plan. An internet speed test may show high megabits per second, but your latency can jump from 20 milliseconds to thousands of milliseconds as soon as the line gets busy. That delay can freeze video calls, cause online games to lag badly, stall web pages, and cut out voice calls. The real problem is that time-sensitive packets are stuck behind large file transfers.

Network engineers often fix this with smarter queue management. The idea was popularized by engineer Jim Gettys in Bufferbloat: Dark Buffers in the Internet (ACM Queue). A common fix uses algorithms like Flow Queue CoDel (FQ-CoDel). Standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force in IETF RFC 8290, FQ-CoDel splits traffic into fair lanes and drops stale packets early. That keeps latency low for calls and games without hurting overall download speed.
